Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Thursday said that "irony died" when a party like Congress questioned others on disclosures and taxation amid a row over the details revealed by him in his election affidavit.
The Congress had moved the Election Commission claiming a mismatch in the actual and declared assets in the affidavit filed by Chandrasekhar, who is in the fray against Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.
The Election Commission then directed the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to verify any such mismatch.
According to reports, Congress claimed that Chandrasekhar has submitted false information since he has declared just Rs 680 as his taxable income for 2021-2022.
In a strong response to the Congress on his X handle, the Union minister said that his 18-year career in public life has been totally free from any blemish.
"Irony certainly died whn Cong whose first family is on trial for stealing properties and transferrng it to their name surreptiously and other shenanigans and a candidate who had to resign as minister for his illegal IPL "interests" start talking abt disclosures and taxation (sic)," the Union minister said.
He also accused Congress of trying to distract voters from the core issues and asserted that such tactics will not work.
Thiruvananthapuram is set to witness a high-profile clash between sitting MP Tharoor and Chandrasekhar in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Both the leaders have been engaged in a fierce war of words ever since the Congress confirmed Tharoor's re-nomination from the Kerala constituency, which goes to polls in the second phase on April 26.
Notably, BJP has never won a Lok Sabha seat in Kerala and is hoping to make inroads in the upcoming general election.
