Amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he misses having a "strong opposition" and this is a pain in his heart.

PM Modi emphasised on the need of a strong opposition in a democracy, saying it keeps the government on the sword’s edge and on its toes. "There is no absence of talent in this country and they should get an opportunity. I thought that in 2014 to 2024 that I should have got a strong opposition, if there is one thing missing in my life, it is that of a good opposition,” Modi said in an exclusive interview with CNN-News18.

Speaking further, Modi stated that the opposition has been of no use to him. They were so full of negativity that decisions in country’s interest were opposed by them for political benefit though they were once in their manifestos, said Modi.

Calling it a "big concern", the BJP leader said that in a democracy as big as India, there should be a strong, aware, active, well-read and well-informed opposition, which eventually benefits everyone.

"When I was the Gujarat CM, our opposition was good. Now the condition is not good, this is a pain in my heart," Modi stated.

As part of his campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls, the Prime Minister has often attacked the opposition parties on a variety of subjects including lack of clarity on PM face, promises made in their manifestos, among others.

Recently, Modi claimed that the opposition INDIA bloc is talking about having five PMs over the next five years. "On one hand is your tried and tested 'sewak' Modi. Who is on the other side, one does not know," he said, targeting the INDIA bloc that has as its constituents opposition parties, including the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Trinamool Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Separately, while addressing a rally in Dwarka, Modi said the BJP's development model is committed to "nation first" but for the Congress and the INDIA grouping, the only agenda is "family first" as he stressed that only a government led by the saffron party can provide the scale and speed that a vast country like India requires.
