Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday greeted people on the occasion of the New Year, offering prayers for peace and happiness in society as 2026 began.
In a message posted on X, the prime minister said, “Wishing everyone a wonderful 2026! May the year ahead bring good health and prosperity, with success in your efforts and fulfilment in all that you do.” He also added, “Praying for peace and happiness in our society.”
The greetings came as people across the country ushered in the New Year with celebrations marked by fireworks, prayers and public gatherings. Cities, hill towns and religious centres witnessed crowds as families and friends came together to welcome 2026.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had shared New Year wishes through another message, expressing hope that the coming months would be positive for everyone. He conveyed his prayers for harmony, good health and overall well-being, underlining the importance of peace and happiness in society as India steps into a new year.
Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi also extended greetings on the occasion. Taking to X, Gandhi wished people a happy New Year and expressed hope that 2026 would bring health, happiness and success to all.
Apart from extending greetings, the prime minister on Thursday chaired the 50th meeting of PRAGATI, the ICT-enabled multi-modal platform for Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation. The meeting marked a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to strengthen cooperative and outcome-oriented governance through technology-driven monitoring and coordination.
According to an official release, the milestone reflects how sustained collaboration between the Centre and states, coupled with real-time tracking, has translated national priorities into tangible outcomes on the ground over the past decade.
During the PRAGATI meeting, the prime minister reviewed five major infrastructure projects spread across five states. The projects cover key sectors such as roads, railways, power, water resources and coal, and together involve an investment of over Rs 40,000 crore.
The prime minister noted that the PRAGATI framework has, over the years, helped fast-track projects worth more than Rs 85 lakh crore and supported large-scale implementation of welfare programmes. He said the government since 2014 has focused on building systems of accountability and delivery, ensuring regular follow-up so that projects are completed within timelines and budgets.
He observed that initiatives which had earlier stalled or were neglected have been revived and completed in the national interest. Concluding his remarks, the prime minister said PRAGATI@50 represents not just a numerical milestone but a renewed commitment to faster execution, better quality and measurable outcomes for citizens.
On the occasion, the Cabinet Secretary made a presentation outlining PRAGATI’s achievements and its role in improving inter-ministerial coordination, Centre-state follow-through, timely closure of projects and effective resolution of public grievances.
