The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) commenced the PCS Mains Examination on Sunday, holding it in two separate shifts across multiple centres for thousands of civil services aspirants in the state.
The first shift of the examination began at 9:00 am and concluded at 12:00 pm, while the second session ran from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The one-day exam format follows a prolonged protest by aspirants last year, who had demanded the civil services exams be held on a single day for logistical ease and transparency.
Aspirant Pankaj Pandey, speaking to ANI, said, “We had submitted four memoranda earlier, but no decision was made. Following this, we called a major agitation on November 11. The protest continued until the government acknowledged our concerns. We thank them for making a favourable decision regarding PCS. While our demand for RO/ARO is still under review, a committee has been formed, and we have currently called off the protest.”
Another candidate, Narendra Tiwari, echoed the sentiment, expressing satisfaction with the resolution. “The Commission, Administration, and Government have addressed our demands regarding PCS. A committee is looking into the RO/ARO shift issue, and we are hopeful it will rule in our favour. The protest has now been completely withdrawn,” he said.
Rajkumar Verma, also appearing for the exam, confirmed that the District Magistrate and Secretary had personally visited aspirants ahead of the Mains exam. “They assured us that PCS would be conducted in a single day and that RO/ARO has been postponed pending committee review. We will act based on that outcome,” he said.
The Commission, in a prior statement, had said: “In view of the nature of the Combined State/Senior Subordinate Service Examination, the Commission has decided in principle to conduct it on a single day, as was done earlier.” Last year’s official schedule indicated a two-shift format from 9:30 am to 11:30 am and 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, but the revised schedule extended the duration of each paper.
As the PCS Mains progresses smoothly, aspirants await a similar resolution for the RO/ARO examinations, for which further announcements are expected post committee review.
