The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released its 2026 list of fake universities operating across India. A total of 32 institutions have been identified as fake. The Commission has advised students and parents not to take admission in these institutions, stating that degrees issued by them will not be valid for jobs or higher studies.
The UGC functions under the Ministry of Education and is a statutory body under the Department of Higher Education, Government of India. In its latest notice, the Commission said that these institutions do not have recognition from the Central Government or any State Government. It referred to Sections 2(f) and 3 of the UGC Act and made it clear that degrees awarded by such institutions have no legal validity.
Students have been asked to check the recognition status of any institution before applying for admission.
