The nation is in mourning following the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who died on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. As a mark of respect, the central government has announced national mourning period. During this time, all official events scheduled for Friday are likely to be canceled, pending confirmation after a Cabinet meeting at 11 am on Friday, December 27.

Schools and Colleges Closed in Telangana and Karnataka

In response to the mourning announcement, the governments of Telangana and Karnataka have declared public holidays on December 27. Schools, colleges, and government offices across these states, including major cities like Hyderabad and Bangalore, will remain closed for the day. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has also announced a seven-day mourning period to honor the former Prime Minister's contributions to the nation.

However, such announcement from other states are yet to be confirmed.

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Passing: Official Statement from AIIMS

Dr. Singh breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. According to the hospital, he experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at his residence and was admitted to AIIMS around 8 p.m. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 p.m. AIIMS confirmed his demise in an official statement, citing his treatment for age-related health issues.

Nation Pays Homage to a Respected Leader

Tributes poured in from all corners of the country to honor Dr. Manmohan Singh, remembered as an esteemed economist and a visionary leader. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his heartfelt condolences, describing Dr. Singh as one of India's most distinguished statesmen. “His efforts as Prime Minister to improve the lives of millions of Indians will always be remembered,” PM Modi shared in a message.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called him "a mentor and guide," emphasizing his wisdom, humility, and deep understanding of economics. “My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Kaur and the family. Millions of us will always remember him with pride,” he added.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also shared a moving tribute, hailing Dr. Singh’s honesty and commitment to the nation. “Few in politics inspire the kind of respect that Sardar Manmohan Singh Ji did. His steadfast dedication to serving India will remain an inspiration,” she wrote.

As the nation observes a period of mourning, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy as a leader who shaped modern India’s economic and political framework continues to resonate across generations.
