Every year, on January 30, India observes Martyrs’ Day to honour Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the country’s freedom struggle. On this day in 1948, Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. His death was a significant moment in Indian history, marking the loss of a leader who stood for non-violence, truth, and unity.
Who Was Nathuram Godse?
Nathuram Godse was born on 19 May 1910 in Baramati, British India. He was associated with the Hindu nationalist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later joined the Hindu Mahasabha. He worked as an editor for Agrani, a newspaper that promoted Hindu nationalist views.
Why Did Nathuram Godse Kill Mahatma Gandhi?
Nathuram Godse did not deny killing Mahatma Gandhi and gave several reasons for his actions. He believed Gandhi’s policies favoured Muslims and harmed Hindus. He accused Gandhi of being too lenient towards Pakistan and blamed him for the violence and suffering caused by the partition of India.
One of Godse’s main grievances was the Indian government’s decision to release Rs 55 crore to Pakistan, which had been withheld due to the Kashmir conflict. Gandhi went on a hunger strike to ensure the payment was made. Godse saw this as an act against India’s interests and believed that removing Gandhi was necessary for the nation’s future.
