10 Critical Skills That Will Define Student Success in the Next Decade

In a rapidly changing world, students need to stay ahead of the curve by acquiring skills that not only meet current demands but also prepare them for future challenges. In an exclusive interview with Moneycontrol.com, Kamlesh Vyas, Partner at Deloitte India, shared valuable insights on the skills students must master to thrive in a competitive global environment.

1. Deep Domain Knowledge

"Mastery in your chosen field is non-negotiable," said Vyas. Regardless of the discipline, students must ensure a thorough understanding of the fundamentals to stay competitive.

2. Technological Literacy

"Incorporating technology into every field is crucial," he explained. Students must be adept at leveraging tools like artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and data-driven technologies to remain relevant.

3. Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving

"Moving beyond rote learning to application-based education is vital," noted Vyas. He emphasized the importance of innovation and the ability to tackle complex problems creatively.

4. Emotional Intelligence

"Technical skills alone won’t guarantee success. Emotional intelligence, collaboration, and empathy are key to thriving in any work environment," he said.

5. Vocational Skills

Vyas stressed the integration of academic and practical skills. "For instance, an accounting student should also master accounting software, and a chemistry student must apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems," he explained.

6. Entrepreneurial Mindset

"Entrepreneurship isn’t just about starting a business—it’s about innovation and leadership, even within an organization," said Vyas. He encouraged students to think like entrepreneurs, regardless of their career path.

7. Leadership Skills

"Leadership is about inspiring others and managing teams effectively," he pointed out, adding that strong leadership skills are critical for those aspiring to managerial or executive roles.

8. Effective Communication

"Clear and articulate communication, both verbal and written, is a must," Vyas emphasized, adding that proficiency in English is a key asset in today’s globalized world.

9. Global Perspective

"Understanding global trends and cultural nuances enhances employability and adaptability," he remarked, urging students to cultivate a broad worldview.

10. Adaptability

"Being open to change and learning new skills on the go is essential for long-term success," said Vyas, highlighting the dynamic nature of today’s job market.

Vyas concluded by underscoring the importance of integrating these skills into academic and extracurricular activities. He also emphasized the NEP’s role in fostering a more holistic, multidisciplinary approach to education, which he believes will help bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world applications.
