Fake Universities UGC List 2025: 54 Private Universities Marked as Defaulters – Full State-Wise List (AI Generated Image)

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has flagged 54 state private universities in India as defaulters in 2025 for failing to comply with Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956. These universities did not provide the required information for inspection and failed to make public disclosures on their official websites, officials confirmed.

With this latest update, students and parents are urged to verify the compliance status of universities before making admission decisions to avoid enrolling in institutions that may not meet regulatory standards.

Why UGC Marked These Universities Defaulters

The UGC mandates that all higher education institutions must maintain a functional website where essential information is accessible to students and the public. This includes details on courses, faculty, infrastructure, and other academic data. Information should be directly available on the homepage without requiring login or registration and must include a search facility for easy navigation.

Despite multiple reminders, emails, and online meetings with officials, these 54 universities failed to submit required forms and proof documents, and did not make public disclosures as per UGC regulations. This non-compliance prompted the UGC to classify them as defaulters and issue warnings for immediate corrective action.

Why You Should Check If a University is UGC Compliant Before Taking Admission

Verifying a university’s UGC compliance is crucial for students to ensure they receive a valid degree recognized across India. Universities that fail to follow UGC disclosure norms may mislead students regarding courses, faculty quality, and other academic offerings. By checking compliance, students can avoid fraudulent institutions, make informed choices, and safeguard their future academic and career prospects.

How to Check If Your University is UGC Approved

Students can easily verify whether a university is recognized by the UGC by following these steps:

  • Visit the official UGC website: https://www.ugc.ac.in
  • Navigate to the “List of Universities” section on the homepage.
  • Select the state and category (e.g., private, central, state) to filter universities.
  • Search for the name of your university in the list.
  • Verify details such as UGC recognition number, state, and year of establishment.
  • Ensure the university has a functional website with public disclosures available for students.
  • By following these steps, students and parents can confirm the legitimacy of the institution before enrolling.
