A set of algebra questions from the 1869 MIT entrance exam has recently taken the internet by storm, igniting discussions about the institution's academic rigor and the evolution of mathematics education.

The seven problems, which cover topics such as simplifying expressions and solving equations, have been described by some as "surprisingly simple" for a prestigious university like MIT. However, others have argued that the questions were challenging, given the limited resources and teaching methods available at the time.

The viral nature of the exam has prompted many to reflect on the changes in mathematics education over the past century. While the fundamental principles of algebra remain the same, the way these concepts are taught and applied has evolved significantly.

Social media users are scratching their heads over the viral MIT Entrance Exam from 1869-1870, shared by Ferment's Library.

A user commented on the relative simplicity of the 1869 MIT Algebra paper, stating, "These are so easy! Current MIT math open courseware is much harder on the undergrad level, presuming a high level of preparation on entrance. Good. We don't want to see decline."

"I must admit I would have failed miserably," commented an internet user, while another added, "This used to give me brain drain!! To this day I've yet to find a purpose for this in life."

Another user commented, "Surprisingly simple test. This is taught to 15 -16-year-olds in most countries today."

As the debate continues, it is clear that MIT's historic algebra exam has captured the public's imagination and offered a glimpse into the institution's rich academic history.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), renowned for its exceptional programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), attracts thousands of applicants annually. However, only a small percentage, approximately 4.8%, are admitted. Given MIT's prestige, it's not surprising that an entrance exam from over 150 years ago went viral, prompting many to test their abilities.
