A 24-year-old postgraduate dental student was found dead at her home in Mumbai’s Antop Hill area in an apparent case of suicide, with police suspecting that mental harassment by her boyfriend may have played a role.
The student, identified as Stuti Sonwane, was pursuing her MDS and lived with her parents and sister. According to investigators, a six page suicide note recovered from her room describes turmoil in her relationship and alleges that her boyfriend frequently doubted her loyalty and made comments about her character.
The note states that the couple’s relationship had become toxic because of these repeated suspicions.
Investigators also found that the note made an indirect reference to the widely reported killing of Shraddha Walkar in Delhi, a case in which she was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend Aaftab Poonawalla and her body parts were later recovered from his refrigerator. In the note, the student wrote that some of her friends were aware of the problems in her relationship and would often joke, "You would be found in a fridge one day".
According to the police, the incident came to light on Tuesday morning when Stuti did not leave her room until around 11 am. Concerned, her parents called out to her but received no response. When the door was forced open, she was found hanging from the ceiling.
Family members rushed her to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and have begun an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officers said they are examining the role of her boyfriend and are currently recording statements from family members as part of the investigation.
