A woman in Madhya Pradesh survived a brutal attack by her husband, spending an entire night hiding in a haystack despite severe burns, before walking four kilometres to seek police help.

The shocking incident took place in Naya Chandrapur area under the Civil Lines police station limits, where the woman was allegedly beaten, strangled and set on fire by her husband on Sunday

The survivor, identified as Rashmi Rajput, told police that her husband, Raju Rajput, assaulted her repeatedly throughout the day. According to her statement, the violence began in the morning when he allegedly beat her and tried to hang her using a rope. She managed to escape at that time.

Later in the evening, between 4 pm and 5 pm, the attack allegedly turned even more violent. Rashmi told police that her husband poured petrol on her and set her on fire. As the flames spread, she ran in panic to save her life while her husband chased her.

In a desperate attempt to survive, Rashmi hid herself inside a haystack near the area. Despite suffering serious burn injuries, she remained hidden there the entire night, fearing that her husband might find her again. She endured severe pain until morning.

At daybreak, Rashmi walked nearly four kilometres to the Civil Lines police station. She then narrated her ordeal to police officers. The police immediately sent her to the district hospital for treatment. Doctors said she has suffered serious burn injuries but her condition is currently stable.

However, Rashmi allegedly requested police not to register a case against her husband. She told officers that she was worried about the future of her children if their father was arrested and sent to jail.

Police officials said her statement is being formally recorded and the matter is under examination. They added that legal action will be taken as per the law, regardless of her request. The accused husband is currently absconding, and a search is underway to trace him.
