  • Opposition leaders called the act shameful, urged PM Modi to act

A political controversy has erupted in Rajasthan after a video surfaced showing senior BJP leader Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria refusing to give blankets to Muslim women during a public distribution drive.

Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Member of Parliament from Tonk-Sawai Madhopur, served as MP from 2014 to 2024. The viral video shows him distributing blankets to a group of women. During the event, he asks one woman her name. When she responds with a Muslim name, he reportedly instructs his aides not to give her a blanket.

In the video, Jaunapuria can be heard saying that those who “abuse” Prime Minister Narendra Modi have no right to receive blankets. He adds that he cannot help it if they feel bad about his decision. He is then seen asking the women to leave the area.

The footage also shows some people confronting the former MP. They question why the women, who had reportedly been waiting for hours, were asked to leave without receiving any help. In response, Jaunapuria says he does not want to argue and leaves the spot. Later, he clarified that the blanket distribution was done in his personal capacity and that no government funds were used for the event.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders. Harish Chandra Meena, the current Congress MP from Tonk-Sawai Madhopur, shared the video on social media and strongly condemned Jaunapuria’s actions. He described the conduct as shameful and inhuman, saying that asking poor and helpless women their names and denying help based on religion harms the social fabric of the country.

Meena said that public representatives are elected to serve everyone equally, regardless of religion or political views. He questioned whether the Prime Minister had instructed party members not to assist those who do not support them. If that were true, he asked, why does the government run schemes for minorities? He called the incident an insult to humanity and the Constitution and urged Prime Minister Modi to take action against the former MP.

Supriya Shrinate, chairperson of the Congress social media wing, also criticized Jaunapuria. Sharing the video online, she called his behavior petty and supported those who protested against him.
