A 26-year-old businessman is recovering from serious injuries after being brutally assaulted by a group of men he had confronted for allegedly harassing three women at a south Delhi tea stall in the early hours of Tuesday.
Police confirmed the arrest of all four accused following the incident in Mehrauli, which has drawn attention to the dangers faced by those who intervene in public harassment.
A transport businessman, Mukesh, was beaten up in Delhi's Mehrauli area for intervening when some men were harassing a young woman. The incident occurred on February 3. The victim, identified as Mukesh Kumar, was returning to his Sangam Vihar home from a wedding when he stopped at a stall on IGNOU Road near Anupam Apartments around 3 am. According to police sources and a family member’s account, four young men present at the stall had begun making lewd remarks and harassing three women.
Kumar intervened, asking them to stop. His objection sparked a verbal confrontation that swiftly escalated into extreme violence. The group allegedly knocked Kumar to the ground and launched a sustained, vicious attack.
Graphic videos of the incident, which circulated on social media, depict a harrowing scene. The footage shows multiple men punching and kicking Kumar as he sits against a pole, then continuing the assault as he lies motionless on the ground.
One assailant is seen attempting to strike the unconscious victim with a large brick, only to be physically stopped by an elderly bystander who intervened. In the clips, the attackers can also be seen tearing Kumar’s clothes during the beating.
Police stated they received a PCR call about the attack and a team from Mehrauli police station responded. Kumar, found with significant injuries, was rushed to Pt Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital for initial treatment before being transferred to the AIIMS Trauma Centre due to the severity of his condition. He was discharged early on Wednesday.
A senior police officer credited the prompt response to one of the women who was being harassed, noting she had initially alerted the police. The officer added that the women had tried to intervene and call for help during the assault, suggesting their actions may have prevented an even worse outcome.
Police moved quickly to identify the suspects through local verification, CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts. Dedicated teams arrested all four men — identified as Vishal Rawat (26), Jatin (20), Sonu (25) and Vivek (20), all residents of Sangam Vihar — from their homes.
A case has been registered under multiple sections of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempt to commit culpable homicide, common intention and a specific provision pertaining to word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman. Authorities stated they are investigating the exact sequence of events and examining whether the accused were under the influence of alcohol.
