A message sent minutes before gunshots were heard inside a locked car in Noida has added to the mystery surrounding the deaths of a young couple on Valentine’s Day. While police say initial signs point to suicide, the man’s family has alleged murder and caste-based threats.

According to police, Sumit (32) allegedly sent a message to his family shortly before the incident, saying he planned to end his life. In the message, he blamed his partner for his decision, claiming she had promised marriage during their 15-year relationship but was now planning to marry someone else.

“I am going to end my life and the woman is responsible for my death. In the 15 years of our relationship, she promised me marriage, but now she is going to marry someone else. Due to this, I am going to end my life as she cheated on me,” the WhatsApp message read.

Bodies found inside locked car

The bodies of Sumit, a resident of Trilokpuri in Delhi, and Rekha (26), who lived in Noida’s Sector 101, were found inside a car parked near Sector 107 on February 14. Both had gunshot injuries to their heads.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Yamuna Prasad said police received information about a car parked near Dadri Road. When officers reached the spot, they found the vehicle locked from the inside with the couple inside. A pistol was recovered from Sumit’s hand.

“On inspection, a boy and a girl were found inside the car with gunshot injuries. A pistol was recovered from the boy’s hand and the car was locked from inside. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide,” the officer said.

The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination, and forensic teams were called to examine the scene. Police said they are continuing legal proceedings and are investigating all possible angles.

Family alleges caste-based threats

However, Sumit’s family has questioned the suicide theory and claimed that the couple may have been murdered. A cousin said the two were “victims of casteism” and alleged that Rekha’s family had opposed their relationship because they belonged to different castes.

“Sumit is my younger brother. They were together for nearly 12 to 15 years, and she attended our family functions. There was never any pressure from our side,” the cousin said.

The family claimed that the couple had faced repeated taunts and threats from the woman’s relatives. They also alleged receiving warning calls, including from international numbers, threatening police action if the relationship continued.

They described the location where the car was found, a few hundred metres from Rekha’s village in Salarpur, as suspicious.

Missing complaints and ongoing probe

Before the incident, Sumit’s family had filed a missing person complaint at the Trilokpuri police station in Delhi. Rekha’s family had also lodged a missing complaint at Sector 58 police station in Noida.

Family members said that if the police had traced the couple earlier, “their lives might have been saved”.

Police officials said that while the locked car and the weapon recovered suggest suicide, no theory has been ruled out. Investigators confirmed that the family’s allegations, including claims of caste-based threats and possible murder, are part of the ongoing probe. Further details are expected after post-mortem and forensic reports are received.
