Ranya Rao gold smuggling case: Kannada actor visited Dubai 30 times over a year, earned Rs 12-13 lakh per trip

Kannada actor Ranya Rao, who was arrested on Wednesday at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport for allegedly smuggling gold from Dubai, allegedly made 30 trips to Dubai, earning Rs 12-13 lakh per trip, India Today reported.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Rao was paid Rs 1 lakh per kilogram of smuggled gold. Ranya Rao, stepdaughter of Director General of Police (Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation) Ramachandra Rao, evaded security by taping the gold to her body. The actress used modified jackets and waist belts repeatedly for her smuggling operations.

Reports state that Rao travelled with the same belts and coats every time. The officials were keeping an eye on Rao because of her frequent visits to Dubai. On her way back on Wednesday, she was reportedly stopped by DRI authorities as she was about to pass through airport security.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized nearly 15 kilograms of gold bars worth Rs 12.56 crore from her possession. On Wednesday, the intelligence agency recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 2.06 crore and Rs 2.67 crore in cash from the residence of the Kannada actor.

Meanwhile, Ranya Rao’s IPS father sidelined himself from the incident and said that he was not aware of any of these things. “I was also shocked and devastated when such an incident came to my notice through the media, I was not aware of any of these things, like any other father, I was also shocked,” Ramachandra Rao told ANI.

“She is not living with us, she is living separately with her husband, there must be some problem between them due to some family issues. Anyway, the law will do its job, there is no black mark in my career. I don’t want to say anything more," he added.
