The post-mortem report of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, who died after his car fell into a deep, water-filled pit in Greater Noida’s Sector 150, has confirmed that the cause of death was cardiac arrest.
The autopsy also revealed that nearly one to two litres of fluid surrounded the chest and ribs of the victim and both lungs were fully congested with water. The nasal passages were completely obstructed by a mixture of mud and liquid, according to a report in News18.
Police said the body was sent for post-mortem after it was recovered following a search operation that lasted several hours. Officials added that further investigation is underway to examine the circumstances of the accident and the response by rescue teams, News18 reported.
According to police officials, the accident occurred in the early hours of January 17. Mehta was driving through Sector 150 when his car allegedly went out of control due to dense fog and plunged into a pit that was more than 20 feet deep.
The pit had been dug for the basement of an under-construction building and was filled with water. It was located close to a drain at a road intersection under the jurisdiction of the Knowledge Park police station.
Police said they received information about the incident around 12.15 am after the car crossed the drain and fell into the pit. Soon after, a rescue operation was launched involving local police, the fire department, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Mehta’s body was recovered several hours later in the morning.
Initial findings suggested that poor visibility due to fog and possible overspeeding may have contributed to the accident, police said.
However, the victim’s family has raised serious concerns over the rescue operation. Mehta’s father, Raj Kumar Mehta, accused the authorities of negligence and delay. He claimed that despite repeated attempts to rescue his son by throwing ropes, there were no trained divers present at the spot.
"My son was struggling to save himself... My son was crying out for help, asking people to help him, but most of the crowd was just watching. Some people were making videos... My son struggled for 2 hours to save his life... The officials and staff present were unable to save him. They did not have any divers... There is negligence on the part of the administration in this entire matter... My demand is that there should be proper action in the case, and full arrangements should be made so that such an incident does not happen again there,” he was quoted by ANI as saying.
The father has demanded strict action against those responsible and called for stronger safety measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
Following public anger and protests by local residents, the Noida Authority took action by terminating the services of a junior engineer from its traffic cell. Show-cause notices were also issued to other officials linked to traffic and safety works in the area.
The authority has ordered a review of safety arrangements at the construction site and directed concerned departments to recheck safety measures at all ongoing projects.
