Mumbai is set to operationalise portions of two new metro lines by December 31. According to officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), a section of Metro Line 9, between Dahisar East and Kashigaon, and a stretch of Metro Line 2B, between Diamond Garden and Mandale, will begin functioning by the end of this month.
Metro Line 9, an extension of Line 7, spans 13.58 km and connects Dahisar East with the rapidly growing Mira-Bhayandar region. The first operational segment will run from Dahisar East to Kashigaon.
Meanwhile, Metro Line 2B, which is being built from DN Nagar in Andheri West to Mandale in Mankhurd, will open its initial 5.3-km phase from Diamond Garden to Mandale. Trial runs on this stretch are currently underway.
Line 9 to operate without PSDsNotably, Metro Line 9 will operate without platform screen doors (PSDs), making it the first corridor since Metro Line 1 in 2014 to do so. All other recently commissioned lines, including 2A, 7, and the underground Line 3, are equipped with PSDs.
PSDs are essential for passenger safety as they prevent accidental falls, trespassing, and suicide attempts, while also helping manage crowd flow during peak hours.
In the absence of PSDs, Line 9 stations will rely on conventional safety measures such as platform markings, signage, and CCTV surveillance.
Future plans for Metro Line 2BThe MMRDA plans to open the second phase of Line 2B, from DN Nagar to Saraswat Nagar in Khar, by next summer.
Once completed, only the central stretch between Saraswat Nagar and Diamond Garden will remain unfinished. The fully operational 23.6-km line, with 20 stations, is expected to provide a vital east-west metro corridor, easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across Mumbai’s suburbs.
