Civic authorities in Mumbai have begun implementing restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Level 4 after air pollution in several parts of the city crossed the 'very poor' and 'severe' levels. Areas affected include Mazgaon, Deonar, Malad, Borivali East, Chakala-Andheri East, Navy Nagar, Powai, and Mulund.
Under the GRAP-4 curbs, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stopped construction and other dust-generating activities in these zones. Over 50 construction sites have received stop-work notices, while small industries such as bakeries and marble-cutting units have been instructed to adopt cleaner processes or face penalties.
To enforce these measures, the civic body has deployed flying squads across all wards. These teams, made up of engineers, police personnel, and GPS-tracked vehicles, are monitoring emissions and ensuring compliance with pollution control rules.
Meanwhile, Monday morning in Mumbai began on a pleasant note. Clear blue skies and a gentle winter breeze gave residents a refreshing start to the week. However, city’s worsening air quality remained as a persistent layer of haze and smog reduced visibility.
Data from AQI.in showed the city’s overall Air Quality Index at 277, a sharp drop from the moderate readings seen earlier in November. Residents reported eye irritation, a faint burning smell, and hazy skylines, indicating high PM2.5 levels.
Industrial and high-traffic areas recorded the worst pollution. Wadala Truck Terminal led with a severe AQI of 387, followed by Chembur (335) and Bandra-Kurla Complex (320). Worli (314) and Deonar (312) also continued to face severe pollution.
