A six-year-old boy was killed and five others injured on Thursday evening when a speeding Maruti Swift driven by a Class 12 student ploughed into pedestrians near a roadside chaat stall in the Banthra area, sparking public anger and raising fresh questions about underage driving on the city's thoroughfares.
The deceased, identified by police as Dikshant, succumbed to critical injuries during treatment at a nearby private hospital, where he had been rushed by local residents and passersby immediately after the crash. His body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

The incident occurred around 6 pm on Kanpur Road near the Hanuman Temple, a busy stretch where food vendors often attract evening crowds.
According to police, the Swift Dzire — travelling from Lucknow towards Kanpur — veered out of control and rammed into a group of people standing at a chaat stall. The force of the impact sent several victims to the ground before the vehicle collided with a parked motorcycle and other nearby vehicles.
Among the injured are two women and a 12-year-old boy, as well as an e-rickshaw driver. According to reports, victims identified so far include Sadhna Patel, her mother Meena Devi, Armaan — a 12-year-old boy — and e-rickshaw driver Awadh Bihari. All are reported to be in stable condition and undergoing treatment. An auto-rickshaw and a motorcycle were also damaged in the collision.
Police investigations have revealed that the driver, a student at a local school, fled the scene immediately after the crash. According to officials, he first dropped off a female passenger at an undisclosed location before disappearing. He was later apprehended following a manhunt.
Preliminary inquiries suggest the teenager and his female companion had attended a farewell party at their school on Thursday and were returning when the accident occurred. Investigators are now examining the vehicle's documents and tracing the individual who provided the car to the minor.
The Lucknow Police have reportedly arrested the student driver. A senior police official confirmed that the teenager is in custody and that the vehicle's documentation is under scrutiny.
The case bears uncomfortable parallels to earlier incidents in the state, including the recent Kanpur Lamborghini crash case in which accused Shivam Mishra was granted bail within hours of arrest — a sequence of events that had already placed the spotlight on road safety enforcement in Uttar Pradesh.
Police are currently pursuing multiple angles, including how the minor gained access to the car and whether the vehicle's registered owner may face liability.
