A 30-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in Karnataka’s Davangere district after his woman eloped with her lover just three months after her marriage. The woman’s brother-in-law, who had arranged the marriage, also allegedly ended his life after learning about the incident.
According to the police, the incidents happened on Monday, and the woman was later arrested on Wednesday on charges of abetment of suicide.
The deceased have been identified as Harish, from Gummanuru village, and Rudresh, 36, from Anekonda village. Harish was the husband of the accused woman, Saraswati. Rudresh was her brother-in-law and had helped arrange the marriage between Harish and Saraswati. Police said Saraswati allegedly eloped with her lover, Kumar.
As per the police, Saraswati left her home saying she was going to a temple but instead fled with Kumar. When Harish learned about this, he was deeply upset. Police said he later died by suicide and left behind a note in which he named people he believed were responsible for his death. After hearing about Harish’s death, Rudresh also allegedly ended his life, The Indian Express reported.
Police officials revealed that a few days after the wedding, Saraswati had filed a complaint at a police station accusing Harish and his family of harassment. Officers believe she may have already been in a relationship with Kumar before her marriage to Harish took place. Rudresh had played a major role in arranging the wedding, police added.
In the alleged death note, Harish claimed that Saraswati and Kumar had threatened him. He also mentioned two of her relatives, Ganesh and Anjeenamma, as being responsible. The Davangere rural police have registered a case and said further investigation is underway.
