In a horrifying revelation following the birth of a baby in a school washroom during a board examination, the 15-year-old victim has told the police that she was sexually assaulted repeatedly over several months by a youth known to her.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday at a government school in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district, has prompted a police investigation and raised serious questions about the safety of minors in their communities.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered by the authorities, the ordeal began for the teenager in May 2024, TOI reported. The minor, who was giving her Class 10 board exam, was questioned by police on Thursday at the district hospital in the presence of her parents. She narrated that she first met the accused during a Garba celebration last year. The two subsequently began communicating over the phone, using a handset belonging to her father.
The complaint alleges that the accused first approached her with a proposal in May 2024. When the teenager refused, the situation turned violent. The survivor has alleged that the youth took her to his rented accommodation and forcibly established physical relations with her. To ensure her silence, she told police that he threatened her with serious consequences if she ever disclosed the incident.
The trauma did not end there. The survivor further stated in her complaint that the accused continued to contact her over the phone and allegedly called her to his room multiple times thereafter, where he maintained physical relations with her again. Trapped by fear and the immense weight of social stigma, she did not inform her family about the assaults and consequently managed to conceal her subsequent pregnancy.
The shocking sequence of events unfolded on the day of the examination. During the test, the teenager complained of severe abdominal pain and sought permission to step out to use the washroom. When she did not return for an extended period, concerned school staff checked the toilet and discovered that she had delivered a baby boy. The girl and the newborn were immediately rushed to a government hospital, where doctors have since confirmed that both are stable.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Umakant Choudhary reportedly said that a case has been registered based on the minor’s statements.
