A story of profound canine loyalty has emerged from the treacherous, snow-bound heights of Himachal Pradesh, where a pit bull refused to abandon its deceased owner for four days despite blizzard conditions.

The incident occurred near the Bharmani Mata Temple in the Chamba district’s remote Bharmour region. According to reports, 19-year-old Vikas Rana and his 13-year-old cousin, Piyush, set out on January 23 with camping gear and the family dog. While filming in the temple’s upper reaches, they were caught in a sudden and severe change of weather. Heavy snowfall, a blizzard and sub-zero temperatures left them stranded.

After a final evening phone call in which Vikas assured his family they were safe, all contact was lost. A complex search operation involving the local administration, police, Indian Air Force, army and mountaineering teams was launched. Drones and helicopters scoured the area for four days, hindered by the extreme conditions.

The breakthrough came on Monday, when a rescue team, cutting through deep snow, reached a hilltop. There, they discovered a scene that left them emotional. Piyush’s body was found near a tree and beside him, shivering but steadfast, was his pit bull. The dog had maintained a silent vigil over its owner’s body throughout the ordeal, enduring freezing winds and snowstorms without food or water. It was reported to have sustained a slight neck injury.

Officials said the loyal companion had also protected the body from wild animals prevalent in the region. When the rescue team initially approached, the dog became aggressive, seemingly interpreting them as a threat. Only after considerable gentle coaxing did it relent. To safely retrieve Piyush’s remains, a veterinarian was required to administer a sedative to briefly make the dog unconscious.

The body of Vikas Rana was later recovered from a nearby drain. Both bodies were airlifted to the Bharmour helipad. The dog, rescued alive, has been handed back to the grieving family.

BJP MLA from Bharmour, Janak Raj, confirmed the recovery. Chamba Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repswal expressed gratitude to all agencies and local residents involved in the “difficult rescue operation.”

A poignant note was added by a member of the rescue team, who indicated that, based on the circumstances, timely intervention might have saved the two young men.
