Two people lost their lives in Ghaziabad in separate roof collapse incidents during a powerful storm and heavy rain late Saturday night. One of the victims was a 58-year-old sub-inspector, Veerendra Mishra, who died when the roof of the ACP office in Ankur Vihar caved in around midnight. Mishra had stayed back at the office to finish pending work and was resting when the incident happened, The Times of India reported.

According to the police, the building, which used to function as a police outpost, had recently been converted into an ACP office due to space issues. Though it had been renovated just a couple of years ago, the roof gave way during the storm. Late Sunday night, two contractors linked to the building work, Ballu Chaudhary from Delhi and Ashish Kumar from Modinagar, were arrested, the report said.
Ajay Kumar Singh, ACP, Ankur Vihar, identified the sub-inspector as Veerendra Mishra. “In the storm and heavy rainfall, the roof of the court office collapsed on him. He was found buried under the debris. We took him to hospital but the doctor declared him dead,” The Indian Express quoted ACP Singh as saying.
DCP (Rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari told TOI that the police broke open the office door after finding it locked from the inside. Mishra was found unresponsive under the rubble and was immediately taken to the hospital.
In another incident around 4 am on Sunday, 25-year-old Mohammad Shaukeen died when the roof of his rented home in Tronica City’s Khushaal Park area collapsed. He was sleeping on the first floor with his family. His wife and children escaped without injuries. Police were informed later that morning by neighbours, The Hindustan Times reported.
