A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation official and two members of his family died in a fire at their residence in northwest Delhi's Adarsh Nagar in the early hours of Tuesday, officials said.

Police suspect the fire started due to an electrical short circuit in a room heater.

The deceased have been identified as Ajay Vimal (45), an Assistant Section Engineer (Signalling & Telecom) with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), his wife Neelam (38) and their 10-year-old daughter Jahnvi.

According to a senior police officer, a PCR call was received at 2.39 am regarding a major fire in a fifth-floor flat at Metro Apartments, located opposite the Majlis Park Metro Station in Mukundpur. The apartment complex serves as residential quarters for Delhi Metro employees.

"The in-house fire-fighting system of the society was activated, and the fire was brought under control before the arrival of fire tenders," the officer said. The three family members were present in the master bedroom at the time of the incident and were found with fatal burn injuries.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation. However, preliminary indications suggest an electrical short-circuit in a room heater. Further investigation is in progress," the officer said.

In an official statement, the DMRC confirmed the loss of their colleague and his family. Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communication at the DMRC, said the incident occurred at around 2:34 am.

"Despite the immediate response and efforts, the family members were found lifeless in their bedroom. The police is further investigating the circumstances of this tragic incident," Dayal said.

He added that the DMRC is providing all necessary cooperation to the police authorities and stands in solidarity with the bereaved relatives.

A senior officer with the Delhi Fire Services said that six fire tenders were sent to the spot following the 2.39 am call. The fire, which involved six domestic articles in a single room, was brought under control by 6.40 am, the officer said.

During the cooling operations, a firefighter named Rakesh sustained hand injuries. He was treated at Jagjeevan Hospital and subsequently discharged.
