Delhi Police has filed an FIR against the father of a 17-year-old accused of killing a 23-year-old biker in a road accident in Delhi. Police have seized the SUV and invoked against the father provisions under Section 199A of Motor Vehicles Act, which hold guardians or vehicle owners accountable when a minor commits a traffic offence.

Earlier, the father had expressed deep regret over the incident and apologised to the victim’s family. He said his family was in shock and ashamed of what had happened, calling the incident a “grave mistake”.

“I am very ashamed. This is a very serious mistake. I am extremely sorry,” he said, adding that the tragedy had deeply affected his entire family.

The accident took place near Lal Bahadur Shastri College in Delhi. The teenager was allegedly driving a Mahindra Scorpio when it collided with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction and then crashed into a parked taxi. The biker, Sahil Dhaneshra, died on the spot, while the taxi driver, Ajit Singh, was seriously injured and taken to hospital.

According to police, the teenager did not have a valid driving licence at the time of the accident. The SUV involved in the crash belongs to his father.

Explaining the circumstances, the boy’s father said he was not in Delhi when the incident happened. He was in Gorakhpur for work and claimed that his son must have taken the car keys without permission. “Had I been in Delhi, this would probably not have happened. When I am at home, I keep strict control,” he was quoted by India Today as saying.

He added that while the boy’s mother was present at home, the teenager acted out of “nadani”, or immaturity. “Because of his naivety, he behaved irresponsibly,” he said.

The father also rejected claims that his son fled the scene after the crash. He said that as soon as he was informed about the incident by his wife, he advised his family to help the injured. “I told them to take the injured to the hospital and cooperate fully with the police,” he said.

Responding to reports that the SUV had multiple traffic challans in the past, the father said his family runs a commercial vehicle business and that the car is usually driven by hired drivers. He claimed the earlier challans were not linked to his son. “The challans are because of our drivers, not my son,” he said.

He also denied that the teenager was making social media reels at the time of the crash. “It was not a reel, but a short video,” he said, adding that he was unaware of any filming.

The accused teenager was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board after the incident and sent to an Observation Home. He was granted interim relief on Tuesday to allow him to appear for his Class 10 board examinations.

It has also emerged that the accused teen had told police he was 19 years old. However, his birth certificate reveals that he was indeed a minor and was not eligible to drive because he did not meet the minimum age requirement for a driving licence. The birth certificate shows the boy was born on August 2, 2009, which means he is 16 years old, NDTV reported.

Meanwhile, Sahil Dhaneshra’s mother, Inna Makan, has alleged that the teenager was driving at high speed and performing dangerous stunts while recording reels with his sister. She has claimed that the SUV was being driven on the wrong side of the road.

“The speed is clearly visible in the videos. My son died because someone wanted to make reels,” she said. She has been demanding strict action and justice for her son.

The teenager’s brother also admitted that the accused was speeding and driving without a licence. However, he said the boy acted responsibly after the accident and did not try to escape.

In an emotional message to Sahil’s mother, the accused’s father said he understood her pain and would spend his life seeking her forgiveness. “Nothing can change what has happened. I know her loss is unbearable,” he said.
