A late-night errand to meet a relative turned into a devastating tragedy for two brothers from Saharanpur after the motorcycle they were riding was crushed by a speeding Mahindra Thar at a traffic intersection in Chandigarh’s Manimajra area.
The victims, identified as Gulsher Ali (46) and Abdul Subhaan (44), both teachers at a madrassa in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, were pronounced dead upon arrival at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) late Tuesday night. They had travelled to Chandigarh on February 21 to collect donations for Ramadan and were residing with a relative in Manimajra.

According to police officials, the incident occurred around 11.30 pm near the Kalagram light point. The brothers were on a motorcycle, with Gulsher Ali at the wheel, heading to visit another relative. As they approached the signal and slowed down, awaiting the green light, a speeding Mahindra Thar — a vehicle with a reputation for reckless driving on Indian roads — allegedly rammed into them from behind.
The impact was catastrophic. Gulsher Ali succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Abdul Subhaan was declared brought dead at the hospital.
Following the collision, the driver of the SUV, identified as 18-year-old Armaan, a resident of Sector 22, fled the scene. He reportedly abandoned the vehicle near the cremation ground in Sector 25 in an attempt to evade capture.
However, swift-thinking passersby noted the Thar's registration number and alerted the police. This crucial information led the Manimajra police to the accused, who was arrested shortly after. Armaan is the son of a Chandigarh Police head constable.
Sources confirmed that the accused was released on bail later. During the investigation, police officials stated that no driving licence was recovered from the teenager. While a medical examination was conducted, authorities ruled out alcohol consumption based on an initial smell test, though detailed reports are still awaited.
The tragedy has left two families shattered. Gulsher Ali is survived by his wife and five children, while Abdul Subhaan leaves behind his wife and four children. The brothers were deeply involved in community work, teaching at a madrassa back home.
After the post-mortem examinations were completed on Wednesday, the Manimajra police handed over the bodies to the grieving family members. A case has been registered at the Manimajra police station and further investigations are underway.
