The ripple effects of the West Asia crisis have begun affecting Bengaluru's hospitality sector, with eateries and hotels warning of a potential shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) across the city, raising concerns about possible restaurant shutdowns.
Amid the situation, Bharatiya Janata Party's Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has written to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, highlighting concerns about a possible disruption in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders and urging the government to ensure continued supply to the hospitality sector.
Sharing the letter on X, Surya said the issue had been brought to the minister's attention and that a high-priority panel had been formed to address the matter. "The reports of a shortage of LPG cylinders and its possible disruption to the hotel industry have been communicated to Hon. Minister Shri @HardeepSPuri Ji. The Minister has constituted a high priority panel to ensure LPG supply is uninterrupted to non-domestic users, including hotels," he wrote.

In the letter sent on Monday, Surya conveyed concerns raised by the Bangalore Hotels Association, which said the hospitality industry depends heavily on commercial LPG for daily kitchen operations. He noted that most commercial kitchens currently lack immediate alternatives such as PNG connectivity or large-scale electric cooking systems.
"Unlike several other sectors, most commercial kitchens currently do not have immediate alternatives such as PNG connectivity or electric cooking systems at scale," the letter said, warning that any disruption in LPG supply could affect restaurant operations, employment in the sector and services provided to consumers.
The association also said that while it supports the government's efforts to prioritise LPG supply for domestic households, it has sought assurances that commercial establishments will continue to receive uninterrupted supplies through the existing distribution system.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has directed oil refineries to increase LPG production and channel the additional output toward domestic consumption. The move comes amid geopolitical disruptions affecting global fuel supply chains.
"In light of current geopolitical disruptions to fuel supply and constraints on the supply of LPG, the Ministry has issued orders to oil refineries for higher LPG production and using such extra production for domestic LPG use," the ministry said in a statement on X.
To manage the supply situation, the ministry has also introduced a 25-day inter-booking period for LPG consumers to prevent hoarding and curb black marketing, while prioritising household LPG supply during the ongoing uncertainty in global energy markets.
