A moderate earthquake struck the Nicobar Islands in the early hours of Monday, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said. The tremor measured 4.6 on the Richter scale and originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, making it more strongly felt at the surface.

According to the NCS, the epicentre was located about 256 kilometres north-east of Campbell Bay. While the quake was not very strong, experts noted that shallow earthquakes tend to transmit greater vibrations and can therefore pose a higher risk of damage compared to deeper tremors.

Despite this, there were no reports of damage or loss of life, and authorities said no tsunami warning had been issued.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie in Seismic Zone V, the highest-risk category on India’s seismic map, making the region prone to frequent seismic activity.
