A moderate earthquake struck the Nicobar Islands in the early hours of Monday, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said. The tremor measured 4.6 on the Richter scale and originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, making it more strongly felt at the surface.
According to the NCS, the epicentre was located about 256 kilometres north-east of Campbell Bay. While the quake was not very strong, experts noted that shallow earthquakes tend to transmit greater vibrations and can therefore pose a higher risk of damage compared to deeper tremors.
