  • Magh Mela 2026 begins January 3 in Prayagraj, spanning 44 days until February 15
  • Millions of devotees expected for ritual bathing at Triveni Sangam
  • Important bathing dates: Paush Purnima, Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, Mahashivratri

One of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings, the Magh Mela, will commence on January 3, 2026 on the sacred floodplains of Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh.

The festival, which draws millions of Hindu devotees, centres on ritual bathing at the Triveni Sangam — the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati — an act believed to purify sins and confer eternal spiritual merit.

The 2026 observance will span 44 days, concluding on February 15 with Mahashivratri observances. Its spiritual pinnacle is the austere practice of Kalpvas, where devotees reside on the riverbank for the entire Hindu month of Magh, bathing three times daily, consuming only one simple meal per day, sleeping on the ground and dedicating themselves to prayer and meditation.

A calendar of holy baths

While bathing occurs daily, several dates hold special significance, expected to draw the largest crowds. According to traditional schedules, the key bathing (snan) dates are:

* January 3: Paush Purnima Snan (inaugural bath)

* January 14: Makar Sankranti bath

* January 18: Mauni Amavasya (the primary and most heavily attended bathing day)

* January 23: Basant Panchami bath

* February 1: Maghi Purnima Snan

* February 15: Mahashivratri bath (concluding event)

The Uttar Pradesh administration is undertaking massive logistical preparations to manage the influx of pilgrims, setting up extensive temporary infrastructure including pontoon bridges, sanitation facilities and vast tent cities.

Distinction from Kumbh Mela

It is important to distinguish the annual Magh Mela from the grand Kumbh Mela, which is held at the same site but only once every 12 years on a vastly larger scale. The Magh Mela, while smaller in comparison, remains a profound annual anchor of Hindu devotional life, sustaining ancient ascetic traditions and attracting pilgrims from across the subcontinent and the global diaspora.

The atmosphere at the Sangam during the festival is transformative; the air resonates with chanted mantras and devotional songs, creating a tableau of unwavering faith.

For the Kalpvasis — those undertaking the month-long vow — the festival is a rigorous spiritual retreat away from all material comforts, a testament to the enduring power of penance and devotion in Hindu practice.

As the first pilgrims prepare to take the inaugural dip on January 3, Prayagraj once again stands ready to serve as the backdrop for this immense expression of faith, a centuries-old tradition that continues to define the spiritual rhythm of India.
