Infosys opens centre in North Carolina, to hire 2,000 Americans by 2021

The company said on Tuesday it has already hired close to 1,200 American workers

An employee is seen behind an Infosys logo at the company's campus in the southern Indian city of Bangalore September 23, 2014. Infosys Ltd's new CEO Vishal Sikka has come up with a novel approach to reviving the financial fortunes of India's trailblazing outsourcing firm: use Facebook at work, tweet, but get the job done. Infosys has long been run as a conservative company known for keeping strict tabs on work hours and sometimes fining employees for not wearing ties on specific days. Such cheerless self-regard could not have come at a more challenging time, analysts say. To retain talent, Sikka hopes to create a more employee-friendly workplace. Infosys said that it will open a technology and innovation hub in Raleigh, North Carolina in the US which is expected to hire 2,000 American workers by 2021.

India’s second largest IT software exporter has said it plans to create 10,000 local jobs in the US over two years and said on Tuesday it has already hired close to 1,200 American workers.

The new centre, which will open in early 2018, will occupy 60,000 square feet in a new facility in Raleigh and has the capacity to house 500 workers. Infosys plans to hire the first 500 workers in Raleigh innovation hub within two years, with the remainder to be hired in the state by 2021, it said in a statement.

“Innovation, technology, and education are part of who we are as North Carolinians, and along the course of this project, Infosys leaders have found that to be the case every step of the way. Our top-flight workforce, commitment to education, and exceptional quality of life help businesses of all sizes recruit and retain excellent employees,” said Governor Roy Cooper in a statement.

Rising protectionism in its largest market — the US — has caused the Indian IT industry to rethink its hiring strategies in the region, which includes more local hiring. It is also facing headwinds from changing business models and visa issues in the US and other key markets such as the United Kingdom and Singapore.

Infosys said that new hires at the Raleigh facility would include recent graduates from North Carolina’s network of colleges, universities and community colleges, as well as local professionals who will benefit from up-skilling through Infosys’ world-class training curriculum. As part of Infosys' commitment to growing 2,000 jobs in the state of North Carolina, the company is partnering with the North Carolina Community College System to create a customised program designed to train the workforce of the future, the company said.
