Bowhead whale protein shows promise in repairing human DNA damage

A protein found in bowhead whales, one of the longest-living mammals on Earth, could help improve how human cells repair DNA, according to new research from scientists at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

Bowhead whales can live for more than 200 years, making them one of the longest-living creatures on Earth. The fact that unlike humans, these huge creatures seem to avoid the kind of gradual cellular damage that comes with ageing, has always puzzled scientists and researchers have been trying to figure out how they manage that.

In this study, researchers looked at a protein involved in DNA repair. When they introduced it into human cells in the lab, the cells were better able to fix damage. It was especially effective at repairing double-strand breaks, which are among the most serious types of DNA damage and are often linked to ageing and conditions like cancer.

What makes this particularly interesting is the source. Bowhead whales have evolved ways to live for decades longer than most mammals without a similar increase in cancer risk. If researchers can really understand how these mechanisms work, it could open the door to new ways of helping human cells repair damage over time.

For now, though, this is still at a very early stage. The findings are based on lab-grown cells, so there’s a long way to go before this turns into any kind of treatment. Scientists will first need to see how these proteins behave in more complex systems and whether they can be used safely in the human body.

Even so, the findings add to a growing body of research looking at how nature’s longest-living species manage ageing at the cellular level. If these mechanisms can be better understood, they could eventually open the door to new therapies aimed at improving DNA repair and reducing the risk of age-related diseases.
