Newly released documents from the United States Department of Justice have reopened questions around the death of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after investigators reviewing surveillance footage noticed an unexplained figure moving near his jail cell hours before he was found dead.
According to the documents, officials examining video from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York observed a flash of orange moving up the stairs toward the isolated L Tier, where Epstein was housed. The footage is from the night of August 9, 2019, just hours before his body was discovered.
An entry in the video observation log noted the unexplained movement but suggested it was never fully reported or clarified at the time. The log stated, “A flash of orange looks to be going up the L Tier stairs — could possibly be an inmate escorted up to that Tier."
🇺🇸 Newly released DOJ records show investigators reviewing surveillance footage from the night of Jeffrey Epstein’s death noticed an orange-colored figure moving up the stairs toward the locked, isolated tier where his cell was located around 10:39 p.m. on Aug. 9, 2019. The FBI, which reviewed the footage, described the unclear image as “possibly an inmate." However, the Department of Justice Inspector General later offered a different assessment. In its final report, the Inspector General identified the figure as an unidentified corrections officer, possibly carrying orange bedding or linen, according to a report by CBS News.
The Inspector General’s findings stated, “At approximately 10:39 pm, an unidentified corrections officer appeared to walk up the L Tier stairway, and then reappeared within view of the camera at 10:41 pm."
The appearance of the orange-colored figure has drawn renewed attention because official accounts previously maintained that no one entered Epstein’s housing tier that night. The newly revealed observation suggests that this claim may have been incomplete or inaccurate.
CBS News, which conducted an independent review of the jail’s surveillance footage, reported that outside video analysts disagreed with the Inspector General’s conclusion. According to the network, analysts said the movement appeared more consistent with an inmate or someone wearing an orange prison uniform, rather than a corrections officer.
Official version of Epstein’s death
Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his cell on the morning of August 10, 2019. Authorities ruled his death a suicide by hanging. His body was discovered sometime before 6:30 am, when a corrections officer arrived to deliver breakfast.
According to official reports, two officers assigned to the Special Housing Unit began delivering breakfast around 6:30 am. When Epstein failed to respond, the officers opened his cell door and found him hanging. No official time of death was ever established.
The medical examiner who conducted the autopsy concluded that Epstein’s injuries were consistent with suicide. The examiner stated that Epstein’s injuries “were consistent with suicide by hanging and that there was no evidence of defensive wounds that would be expected if his death had been a homicide."
The report further noted, “Epstein did not have marks on his hands, broken fingernails or debris under them, contusions to his knuckles that would have evidenced a fight, or, other than an abrasion on his arm likely due to convulsing from hanging, bruising on his body."
Questions remain
Despite multiple investigations, Epstein’s death has continued to fuel public speculation and distrust of official findings. The newly disclosed video observations have once again raised doubts about whether all relevant details were fully examined or disclosed at the time.
With conflicting interpretations of surveillance footage and unanswered questions about jail monitoring failures, scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
