The arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor by UK police over alleged links to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein has intensified scrutiny of why no comparable high-profile arrests have taken place in the United States.

Andrew, formerly known as Prince Andrew, was detained on suspicion of misconduct in public office and later released under investigation. He has consistently denied wrongdoing.

The arrest relates to his association with Epstein and allegations that he shared confidential material. British authorities have urged anyone with relevant information tied to Epstein to come forward.

However, he was released from police custody on February 19, 2026, about 11 hours after his arrest.

UK investigation gathers pace

According to Reuters, London’s Metropolitan Police said they were contacting former and serving protection officers who worked with Andrew to determine whether any information could assist ongoing inquiries.

“They have been asked to consider carefully whether anything they saw or heard during that period of service may be relevant to our ongoing reviews and to share any information that could assist us," police said.

Officials added, “We continue to urge anyone with new or relevant information to come forward. All allegations will be taken seriously and, as with any matter, any information received will be assessed and investigated where appropriate".

The renewed focus follows the release of additional “Epstein Files,” which indicate Andrew remained in contact with Epstein after his 2008 conviction. The documents reportedly suggest he shared British government investment-related material with the financier. Andrew has denied any misconduct.

King Charles previously stripped his brother of royal titles and privileges. “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course," he said, as quoted by Reuters.

Why no major US arrests?

The contrast between UK action and developments in the US has raised questions about accountability across the Atlantic.

Legal and political analysts point to the complex web of high-profile individuals linked to Epstein, along with ongoing reviews of large volumes of documentary evidence, according to the Converstation report. Pressure has mounted in Congress for further transparency and investigation, but so far, no sweeping arrests have followed the latest disclosures.

Critics argue that political dynamics within the US justice system may also be a factor. Some contend that institutional independence has been weakened, while others note that the Epstein network involved influential figures across political and economic spheres, complicating potential prosecutions.

Despite public speculation, there is no clear indication that immediate large-scale arrests are imminent in the United States.

The report also suggests that one reason for the lack of major arrests in the United States is what it describes as the Trump administration’s control over key investigative agencies and departments.

However, it also notes that the Epstein scandal reaches deep into American power structures. The case involves influential figures across political lines, including some of the wealthiest individuals in the country, networks that are often well-positioned to shield themselves from scrutiny.

The report further argues that the situation reflects Trump’s strong hold over his political base. From an outside perspective, it appears contradictory. A movement that once rallied around claims of a hidden elite cabal involved in child exploitation might be expected to demand sweeping accountability following the Epstein disclosures, yet such calls have not materialised at the scale some anticipated.

Broader implications

Observers say Andrew’s arrest underscores the capacity of democratic institutions to pursue investigations involving powerful figures, even if the process is slow and contested.

Whether similar accountability measures will materialise in the US remains uncertain. For now, the divergence between the UK’s legal actions and the relative inaction in the US continues to fuel debate over the handling of the Epstein scandal and the resilience of institutional checks and balances.
