US President Donald Trump is considering authorising a limited military strike on Iran as an initial step to pressure Tehran into agreeing to his demands for a nuclear deal, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the report said the proposed action would involve a narrowly targeted assault on select military or government facilities. The objective would be to coerce Iran into halting its nuclear enrichment activities without immediately escalating into a full-scale conflict that could provoke significant retaliation.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the potential strike could take place within days if approved. Should Tehran refuse to comply, the US could then escalate to a broader military campaign targeting regime-linked infrastructure - an operation that might even seek to destabilise or topple the government in Tehran.
Meanwhile, in a letter to the UN Secretary-General, Iran warned that if it is attacked, all bases, facilities and assets of the hostile force in the region would be treated as legitimate targets as part of its defensive response, adding that the United States would bear full and direct responsibility for any unpredictable and uncontrollable consequences.
