President Donald Trump signalled fresh pressure on Kyiv on Wednesday, saying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “has to be realistic” about the ongoing war and questioning when Ukraine plans to hold its next elections.
Trump’s remarks followed his separate calls with the leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom, discussions he said touched on Ukraine “in pretty strong terms.” According to Trump, the European partners are hoping for a joint meeting with the US and Ukraine as soon as this weekend.
“They would like to have a meeting this weekend with both of us, and we’ll make a determination depending on what they come back with,” Trump told reporters.
This came after the US president has, in recent days, been publicly urging Zelenskyy to consider a proposed peace plan aimed at ending the conflict launched by Russia in 2022.
Speaking to reporters during a Q&A session, Trump reiterated that Kyiv may need to adjust its expectations.
“I think he has to be realistic,” Trump said of the Ukrainian leader. He added that he continues to wonder, “you know, how long is it going to be until they have an election?”
The White House has not yet confirmed whether the US will take part in the meeting requested by European leaders.
