Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Wednesday (February 4) that the country’s men’s cricket team will not take the field against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, confirming Islamabad’s decision to boycott the high-profile fixture.
India and Pakistan are due to meet in a Group A match of the tournament on February 15 in Colombo. However, Sharif said Pakistan would not participate in the contest, citing solidarity with Bangladesh and insisting that political considerations should not intrude into sport.
“We have taken a very clear stand on the T20 World Cup that we won’t play the match against India because Pakistan said this a field of sports, not politics. There should be no politics on the sports field. We have taken a very considered stance, and we should completely stand by Bangladesh, and I think this is a very appropriate decision,” Shehbaz said while addressing Pakistan’s cabinet on Wednesday.
