External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a “fruitful conversation” with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Monday, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation between India and Canada.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar said the discussion covered the deepening of India-Canada relations and the continuation of high-level exchanges, emphasizing the commitment to further collaboration across multiple areas of mutual interest.
The talks come at a time of strained relations between the US and Canada. A day after US President Donald Trump issued a warning to impose steep tariffs on Canada, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney clarified that Ottawa has no plans to pursue a free trade agreement with China, countering claims that Canada is moving closer to Beijing.
Carney’s comments followed Trump’s threat of a 100 per cent tariff on Canadian goods should a trade deal with China proceed. The Canadian leader reassured that recent engagement with Beijing was limited to resolving specific tariff disputes, stating, "What we have done with China is to rectify some issues that developed in the last couple of years."
