At least 40 people, including students, were killed and 48 others injured after Israeli strikes hit a girls’ primary school in Minab city in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province, Iranian state media reported on Saturday.
Quoting a provincial official, state broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting said the school was struck during attacks earlier in the day. Further details on the victims were not immediately available.
The reported strike came amid a sharp escalation after the United States and Israel carried out joint attacks on Iran early Saturday, saying the operation was aimed at removing “threats” posed by the Iranian “regime”.
Separate video statements were released by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, both of whom indicated support for potential political change in Tehran.
Iran condemned the strikes as a violation of its sovereignty and vowed retaliation, subsequently launching counterstrikes.
The escalation comes even as diplomatic efforts were underway. Oman has been mediating talks between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme, with the latest round held in Geneva on Thursday.
