From sanctions to strikes: Why Trump escalated action against Venezuela

The United States has escalated action against Venezuela, launching strikes on Caracas as President Donald Trump claims the capture of Nicolas Maduro, citing drugs, regime change, oil interests and rivalry.

Why Trump escalated US action Venezuela

The United States’ decision to launch strikes on Caracas and claim the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro marks the most dramatic escalation yet in Washington’s long-running confrontation with Venezuela’s leftist government. The move follows months of mounting pressure and reflects a mix of security, political, economic and geopolitical calculations.

Drug trafficking and national security claims

The Trump administration says its actions are aimed at stopping illegal drugs from entering the United States. Washington accuses Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro of leading what it calls the Cartel de los Soles, a Venezuela-based drug network designated by the US as a “global terrorist organisation”. US officials have alleged links between Maduro’s government and criminal groups such as Tren de Aragua and Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel.

Under this justification, the US has expanded naval patrols, seized oil tankers, and carried out repeated strikes on vessels it claims were involved in drug trafficking. Critics note that Venezuela is not a major source of fentanyl and that Colombia and Mexico play far larger roles in global narcotics flows, raising questions about the scale and focus of the US response.

Regime change pressure on Maduro

Beyond drug enforcement, the Trump administration has made clear it wants Maduro out of power. The US and several allies say he rigged elections to remain president and view his government as authoritarian and corrupt. Donald Trump has privately urged Maduro to flee the country and publicly suggested it would be “smart” for him to step aside.

This stance fits a longer US policy trajectory. Washington has not recognised Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate leader for years, imposed sweeping sanctions, and in 2020 charged him with narco-terrorism, offering a reward that eventually rose to $20 million for his capture. Trump’s return to office has marked a shift from economic pressure to direct military action.

Oil, resources and strategic interests

Venezuela’s vast natural resources are central to its strategic importance. The country holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves, along with significant gas and gold deposits. Although production has collapsed under sanctions and mismanagement, control over such reserves could influence global energy markets and reduce US dependence on West Asian oil.

Caracas argues that Washington’s true objective is to seize these resources. The US denies this, but its naval “blockade” of Venezuelan oil shipments and the seizure of tankers have reinforced suspicions of economic motives.

Great power rivalry in the region

Geopolitics also plays a key role. Venezuela has deepened ties with Russia, China, Iran and Cuba, receiving loans, weapons and security support. For Washington, intensifying pressure on Maduro also serves to weaken the influence of these US rivals in the Caribbean and Latin America, a region long regarded as strategically vital by the United States.

Escalation risks

While US strikes may weaken Maduro’s grip on power, the risks of further escalation are significant. Venezuela maintains one of the largest standing armies in Latin America and relies on armed pro-government groups known as colectivos. A prolonged confrontation could destabilise the region, trigger large-scale refugee movements and raise difficult questions about what follows if Maduro is removed from power.

For now, Trump appears determined to continue applying military pressure, leaving the situation volatile and the outcome uncertain.
