In the lead-up to the much-awaited match between India and Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2026, a controversy broke out after a Pakistani television program aired an allegedly manipulated audio clip attributed to Rajeev Shukla, vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The program, aired on ARY News and hosted by former Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, featured an AI-created audio clip featuring quotes from Shukla about the current tension between the two cricket boards.
The audio clip appeared to be saying that the BCCI has been repeatedly asking the International Cricket Council (ICC) to convince the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to participate in the match against India. The audio clip was carefully edited to give a misleading impression, as if it were direct quotes from Shukla himself, which gained quite a lot of popularity on social media.
As soon as the video went viral, Shukla responded on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that the video was an “AI-generated” manipulation and asked people not to believe or share the misleading information. In his post, he specifically mentioned that the manipulated audio was not his words and asked people to report such fake videos wherever they are found.
“A video of my comments on the India-Pakistan World Cup match has been manipulated using AI to change the audio. These statements are not mine. I urge everyone not to believe or share this misleading information and report it wherever such videos are seen.” Rajeev Shukla on X
According to confirmed reports, Shukla’s statements were actually appreciative of the ICC’s efforts in resolving the issue and ensuring that Pakistan would go ahead and play the match as scheduled. He was appreciative of the “amicable solution” that was reached after discussions between the cricket boards, hoping to keep the essence of the tournament paramount.
The controversy surrounding the fake audio clip comes at a time when emotions are running high in one of the most popular rivalries in the world of cricket. With fans from both India and Pakistan eagerly awaiting the February 15 match in Colombo, the possibility of misinformation spreading is high. The fact that Shukla had to come out and deny the audio clip is a testament to the importance of information verification, particularly in the age of AI deepfakes.
Cricket authorities and experts are now urging media organizations and social media platforms to be vigilant about any kind of information that has been tampered with and could potentially lead to further confusion.
The controversy has also brought to the fore the increasing misuse of artificial intelligence in media and political discourse. As audio and video deepfakes become harder to detect, there are many questions being raised regarding the standards of verification in broadcast media. It is crucial to remember that in high-stakes situations such as an India-Pakistan cricket match, where passions are already running high, any form of misleading information has the potential to quickly escalate into a diplomatic or sporting crisis.
