China used more than double the electricity of the US in 2025, China Central Television reported Saturday, citing data from the National Energy Administration.
Total power consumption in China rose 5% from a year earlier to 10.4 trillion kilowatt hours, according to the report. That’s the highest annual electricity use ever recorded by a single country, and surpassed the combined annual total of the EU, Russia, India and Japan, CCTV said.
The report highlights the surge in demand for power around the world amid growth in data centers for artificial intelligence and use of electric vehicles. The State Grid Corp. of China said this week that it will lift fixed-asset investment by about 40% over the next five years, as the nation races to expand its power network.
Electricity consumption in China’s charging and battery-swapping service industry grew 48.8% versus 20224, and 17% in the information transmission, software, and information technology sector, the energy administration said in a separate statement posted on its official WeChat account. These sectors were key drivers of consumption growth in the services industry.
