China’s first snowfall of the season arrived with striking intensity, turning city streets into a quiet, smoke-white landscape as a blizzard swept across parts of the country on December 2. Visuals shared online showed cars creeping through near-whiteout conditions, with strong winds lifting waves of snow into the air and blurring the surroundings until buildings and roads melted into a pale haze. In viral clips, the horizon vanished behind sheets of frost, giving the snowfall the look of a painted winter scene. Social media users flooded platforms with videos and photos, many describing the moment as magical.
While residents in some urban areas paused to admire and enjoy the rare early snowfall, daily life continued uninterrupted for others. Across agricultural regions, farmers pressed on with routine production despite the worsening weather, highlighting the contrast between winter wonder and work on the ground as temperatures dropped and snow accumulated.

‘Snow vacation’
The snowfall has coincided with the rollout of China’s first “snow vacation”, a pilot initiative aimed at stimulating winter tourism and encouraging more flexible use of paid leave. Students in several northeastern and northwestern provinces are beginning their first official break under the policy, which authorities say is designed to balance education with seasonal economic activity.
In Altay, in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, the break for students in compulsory education runs from Monday to Friday and follows a nine-day holiday in Urumqi, China Daily reported. The move has been welcomed by local governments eager to promote winter travel and outdoor learning experiences.
Tourism authorities are launching discounted leisure and educational packages around the holiday period. In Jilin province, officials have opened 171 A-rated winter scenic spots and 39 certified skiing and skating facilities free of charge to primary and secondary school students, while offering reduced-price admission for parents.
Jilin has also encouraged employees to use paid leave to accompany children during the break, and schools have been instructed not to organise classes or assign homework.
Travel agencies say the initiative has already boosted bookings. Data from travel platform Qunar shows ticket reservations for tourist sites in Jilin between Wednesday and December 7 rose 13 percent year on year. Flight bookings from Changchun surged 57 percent from Friday to Monday, compared with the previous week.
