Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, on Wednesday conveyed Makar Sankranti greetings to “all Hindu brothers and sisters” in Bangladesh and India, expressing hope that the sun’s light would brighten every life.
Hamidullah shared the wishes in both Bengali and Hindi on his X handle, along with photographs of colourful pinwheels and traditional sweets.
The message has drawn attention as it comes against the backdrop of recent attacks on minorities, including Hindus, in Bangladesh.
“Happy Makar Sankranti to all #Hindu brothers and sisters in #Bangladesh #Bharat! May everyone’s life be illuminated by the sun. Let every family celebrate the festival of pinwheels and kites! @MEAIndia #Bangladesh #India,” Hamidullah wrote on social media.
India has repeatedly voiced concern over incidents targeting minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh.
Makar Sankranti marks the Sun’s transition into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makar) and is observed as a mid-winter harvest festival.
