Perched high up in the rugged terrain of the Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh is a so-called loneliest post office in the world. This little branch in the Hikkim village of Spiti Valley is the highest post office in the world and is approximately located 4,724 metres above sea level. It is encircled by high snow-white mountains and deserted mountain wastelands, and it is a way-station between the few broken houses and the rest of India.

The post office was started in 1983, and it has continued running to date despite the harsh conditions in the region. In the eyes of the people of this small village, it is not just a government branch, but a lifeline in terms of letters, packages and even small savings. There is hardly any cellphone coverage here, so this small post office is the lifeline of communication and money transfers.

The loneliness of Hikkim is most apparent during winter. The snow falling heavily isolates the village for weeks upon weeks with no communication with the outside world. Roads are shut, transport is grounded, and postmen are usually forced to walk long distances to deliver mail to the nearest town which is reachable. Regardless of these challenges, the service has been operating remarkably consistently.

The thought of depositing a card in the highest post office is too tempting to tourists who come to the Spiti Valley. Thousands of postcards are being stamped by the postmaster every year, most of them being sent to family and friends worldwide. In the eyes of visitors, it turns into a physical memory of being on the frontier of civilisation, with no one around and with epic scenery.

Not only is this little branch not a mere postal point in itself, but it is an embodiment of human strength and the timeless appeal of snail mail. It is the expression of the fact that even in the digital age, traditional services can be emotional and practical. Even in one of the most grimy places on the planet, the loneliest post office in the world shows that despite all the difficulties, human interconnections and communication do not disappear.
