One of the most exquisite, but unobtrusive, travel destinations in India is the Nubra Valley in Ladakh. It lies between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges and is commonly referred to as the Valley of Flowers of Ladakh, yet the landscape of the area is like no other. The peculiarity of Nubra is the unusual landscape of the country, where the severe cold desert blends effectively with snow-white mountains and forms an unreal impression on the tourists. Nubra Valley is a conglomeration of adventure, culture and nature, and it is accessible via the renowned Khardung La Pass, which is considered to be among the highest motorable roads in the world.

The valley is famed for the twin villages of Diskit and Hunder. The Ladakh's oldest and largest monastery is located in Disit, which provides a panoramic view of the valley and has a feeling of deep spirituality. In the Diskit Monastery lies the iconic towering statue of Maitreya Buddha. The Hunder, on the other hand, is renowned for its dunes and the Bactrian camels. Riding on these two-humped camels that used to be part of the Silk Route caravans in the past presents the visitors with an idea of the trading history of the region.

Fascinating villages such as Turtuk, Sumur and Panamik are also sprinkled in the Nubra Valley. Turtuk is a relatively recent tourist attraction that provides a real insight into Balti culture, cuisine and hospitality. The natural hot springs of Panamik are said to cure, and the area is mostly known because of its natural hot springs and is also known as the home of relaxation, with its serene Samstanling Monastery and wet landscapes that attract visitors at Sumur.

Nubra Valley is suggested to be visited between May and September when the weather is nice, the roads are passable, and the juxtaposition between hues of the desert and mountain peaks is most dramatic. In addition to sightseeing, the valley can be explored through trekking, camping in star-studded skies, and interaction with the local communities in the valley, who have maintained their traditions in this high-altitude terrain.

Inhabited by barren but beautiful nature, rich cultural heritage, and very hospitable locals, Nubra Valley is a must-visit place on the list for people who want to see another side of Ladakh. Not just another addition to the Ladakh list of sightseeing, it is a place that exposes how nature and culture live in harmony with each other at the roof of the world.
