A new era in Indian tourism has commenced with the initiation of a round-voyage cruise to the only active volcano in India that is located on the coast of the Andaman Islands. Beginning on October 24, 2025, travellers will be able to take off a ship at Haddo Wharf, Port Blair, on every other Friday at 9 pm to navigate the Andaman Sea. It departs at the beginning of the morning on Saturday and arrives in the area of Barren Island early morning, where the volcanic landscape can be observed in all its glory throughout the day and back by the end of the morning, around 4 pm on the same day. Such a format means that the guests are not denied dramatic views, and the ecosystem of the delicate island must not be disrupted.

Barren Island is approximately 140 km off Port Blair, occupies approximately 8.34 sq km, and it is the only active volcano in the Indian subcontinent. The volcano has been active multiple times within recent years (as of September 2025), though it is not inhabited, and this is why it is a geological location of international interest. Being located on a convergent tectonic boundary contributes to its scientific significance, as well as its value as a travel curiosity.

The cruise has four types of accommodation, namely, the premium Coral Suite, which has two-berth cabins, the Reef Suite, which has four berths, the Island Breeze, which has 6 berths and a dorm-style Lagoon with 16-24 berths. Prices start at approximately 3,200 and go up to 8,300 according to cabin, and there are other meal plans. They have to be booked through the online portal of the Directorate of Shipping Services, and the delivery is conditional upon the weather conditions.

Although this offering is a thrilling one, allowing travellers to view one of the most rare and dramatic natural phenomena in India, visitors are to remember that the whole process of disembarkation on the island is not possible, and the conditions on board can be quite primitive during the sea time. To those who feel comfortable enough to give up comfort in favour of the opportunity to view molten rock, smouldering vents, and jagged volcanic outlines in open skies, such a cruise will be once in a lifetime experience.
