Unlock 6 Cabin Crew Secrets to Make Your Next Long-Haul Flight Feel Effortless.

The holiday rush is here, airports are buzzing, and for many travellers, long-haul flights are simply unavoidable. Hours spent in the air, shifting time zones, and packed cabins can easily drain you before your trip even begins. But with the right guidance, that dreaded 9–10-hour flight can feel far less daunting — and maybe even pleasant.

Drawing from years of experience high above the clouds, Air India cabin crew member Hufriya Bhivandiwalla offers six tried-and-tested tips that genuinely make a difference. Whether you’re heading out on a dream vacation or a crucial business trip, her advice can help you land feeling refreshed, not wrecked.

Picture this: you're at the airport, passport in hand, excited for your long-awaited holiday. Then reality strikes — hours of sitting, dry cabin air, and cramped seats. But here’s the good news: with a little prep and a few smart in-flight habits, you can turn that long stretch into a smooth, restful transition to your destination.

Below is what really works.

1. Hydration is everything.

If there’s one non-negotiable on a long-haul flight, it’s water. Cabin air is notoriously dry, and dehydration is one of the biggest reasons passengers step off feeling fatigued. Aim to sip at least 1.5 litres of water during the journey and keep a refillable bottle handy so you can top it up as needed. Try to avoid caffeinated or fizzy beverages, but if you do indulge, balance it with extra water. You’ll feel the difference the moment you land.

2. Beat jet lag like a pro.

Jet lag doesn’t have to ruin the first few days of your trip. Start preparing your body clock in advance by shifting your meal and sleep timings closer to the time zone of your destination. Setting your watch to the new time as soon as you board can also help your brain adjust. These small adjustments go a long way in easing the transition and reducing grogginess upon arrival.

3. Sleep well.

Sleeping on a plane can be a challenge, but a little planning helps. Choose a seat away from high-traffic spots like the galley or lavatories. Carry your own comfort essentials — a neck pillow, eye mask, earplugs, or noise-cancelling headphones. Calming music, ambient sounds, or a guided relaxation audio can help you drift off more easily, even in a bustling cabin.

4. Stay comfortable and active.

Sitting for hours can leave your body feeling stiff and restless. Make it a habit to stretch at intervals — roll your shoulders, flex your ankles, twist gently at the waist, or bend forward to loosen your back. When the seat-belt sign is off, take a short walk down the aisle every couple of hours. Wearing loose, breathable clothing and comfortable shoes also helps maintain healthy blood flow and boosts overall comfort.

5. Skincare is essential.

Long-haul flights can be harsh on your skin. Avoid heavy makeup and let your skin breathe. Moisturise your face, hands, and feet regularly to combat dryness. Since UV rays are stronger at high altitudes, sunscreen becomes even more important — apply it before the flight and reapply during the day.

6. Unwind and relax.

Once you’re settled in, give yourself permission to slow down. Sip a warm drink, listen to soothing music, or explore Air India’s in-flight entertainment library. With movies in 17 languages, curated global playlists, and dedicated kids’ content on Wobble, there’s more than enough to keep you engaged and relaxed at 35,000 feet.

With a little planning and these expert-backed tips, your long-haul experience can be just as enjoyable as the destination waiting for you. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey — the skies are friendlier than you think.
