If you thought dining out was just about food, think again! Tucked away in Meghalaya’s lush hills lies a one-of-a-kind experience that will surprise and delight every traveler. Welcome to Sohra 1885, a quirky café housed inside a 140-year-old British-era police station — yes, you read that right, a real-life lockup turned foodie hotspot!

From Colonial Cell to Culinary Gem

Once a feared detention center during British rule, this historic police station has undergone a magical makeover. Imagine savoring mouth-watering dishes while seated inside former jail cells, surrounded by the echoes of history and vintage British artifacts. It’s part museum, part café, and entirely unforgettable.

A Bold Vision Realized

What began as a bold dream by Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, when he was DSP, has come to life. Determined to save the historic police station from fading into oblivion, Syiem championed its preservation. Once a new police station was built nearby, the old building was transformed into Sohra 1885 — a unique space where history meets warm hospitality. This remarkable revival was made possible with the full support of the Meghalaya Police team, turning heritage into a vibrant destination.

Monetising Heritage for a Cause

“Monetisation meant extra income for the force and especially for police welfare activities,” Syiem explains. Two years ago, a formal bidding process began to find a partner to run the café. Enter Nafi Nongrum, a young local entrepreneur who refurbished the entire building using original British-era items, preserving the authentic look of walls and floors. With a seating capacity of 100, the café beautifully balances heritage charm with modern comforts.

More Than Just a Café

This isn’t just about nostalgia. Every bite you take supports Meghalaya Police welfare, turning your meal into a meaningful contribution. Thanks to the careful restoration by local entrepreneur Nafi Nongrum, Sohra 1885 keeps the spirit of the past alive while serving tasty delights with a modern twist.
