Devotees planning a spiritual journey to Uttarakhand can start preparing early. The much-awaited Char Dham Yatra 2026 is set to begin on April 19, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya, according to announcements by the Char Dham Temple Committee.
Considered one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism, the Char Dham Yatra takes devotees through the four revered Himalayan shrines—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath—nestled in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Every year, lakhs of pilgrims undertake this journey, seeking spiritual fulfilment amid some of India’s most dramatic mountain landscapes.
Char Dham Yatra 2026: When Does the Pilgrimage Start?
The Shri Char Dham Yatra for 2026 will formally commence on Friday, April 19 (28th Baishakh). On this day, the portals of Shri Yamunotri Dham and Shri Gangotri Dham will open for devotees with traditional Vedic rituals.
Following this:
Kedarnath Dham will open on April 22, 2026, with the doors unlocking in the early morning hours during an auspicious muhurat.
Badrinath Dham will open on April 23, 2026, marking the final shrine to welcome pilgrims for the season.
These temples remain closed for nearly six months every year due to extreme winter conditions and reopen during summer, typically between April and May. The yatra concludes around October or November, before heavy snowfall cuts off access routes.
Why the Char Dham Yatra Follows a Fixed Route
Traditionally, devotees undertake the Char Dham Yatra in a clockwise sequence, starting from Yamunotri, followed by Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath. This order is believed to enhance the spiritual significance of the pilgrimage and is followed by most yatris.
The word ‘Char’ means four, while ‘Dham’ refers to sacred religious destinations located at high altitudes. Together, they represent a journey that is as physically demanding as it is spiritually rewarding.
Mandatory Registration for Char Dham Yatra 2026: How to Apply
Registration is mandatory for all pilgrims undertaking the Char Dham Yatra. The Uttarakhand government has streamlined the process to ensure safety, crowd management and real-time monitoring.
Here’s how to register online:
Pilgrims can also register via WhatsApp: Type YATRA and send it to 8394833833.
Answer the automated questions to complete registration.
For assistance, devotees may also call the toll-free helpline: 0135-1364, where officials guide pilgrims through the process.
To monitor movement and ensure safety, the state government uses a GPS-based tracking system that records pilgrim data and manages footfall across all four shrines.
Phones and Cameras Banned Inside Char Dham Temples
In a significant move ahead of the 2026 pilgrimage season, the Uttarakhand government has announced a complete ban on mobile phones and cameras inside the temple premises during the Char Dham Yatra.
The ban applies to all four shrines—Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Officials said the decision was taken to maintain the sanctity, discipline and spiritual decorum of the temples, as well as to reduce crowd congestion and distractions during darshan.
Pilgrims will be required to deposit phones and cameras outside the temple complex before entering. Authorities are expected to put proper arrangements in place to facilitate smooth enforcement of the rule.
